Otani University Supports “Tree of Enlightenment” Exhibit at India Pavilion — Showcasing Buddhist Wisdom and Scriptual Heritage

大阪・関西万博に出展するインド館「バーラト」の入口展示「悟りの樹（菩提樹）」に、大谷大学（京都市北区）が協力した。
Otani University (Kita-ku, Kyoto) has collaborated on the “Tree of Enlightenment” exhibit at the entrance of the India Pavilion “Bharat” at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
この展示は、ブッダが菩提樹の下で得た悟りがアジア各地に広まり、人々をつなげていった仏教の伝播を表現。インドの古代言語パーリ語で伝えられた教えが、各国の文字で記録されてきた歴史に光を当てる。
The display illustrates how the enlightenment attained by the Buddha under the Bodhi tree spread throughout Asia, connecting people through the teachings of Buddhism. It highlights how these teachings, originally transmitted in the ancient Indian language Pāli, were recorded across Asia in various scripts.
本学はインド政府より協力依頼を受け、仏教研究の専門知識とともに、所蔵するパーリ語の仏教写本「貝葉写本（ばいようしゃほん）」の画像データを提供した。
The university was requested by the Government of India to contribute its academic expertise in Buddhist studies and to provide digital images of its Pāli palm-leaf manuscripts (baiyō-shahon).
展示では、大谷大学所蔵の写本画像や、多様な文字で記されたブッダの金言が紹介されている。
The exhibit features images from Otani University’s manuscript collection, along with Buddha’s aphorisms presented in multiple scripts.
この協力は、真宗総合研究所の指定研究「仏教写本研究」の一環で、研究代表は同研究所のダシュ・ショバ・ラニ教授が務める。
The collaboration is part of a designated project at the Shin Buddhist Comprehensive Research Institute, led by Professor Dashu Shobha Rani.
写本群は1900年にタイ王室から寄贈されたものとみられ、日本最大級のパーリ語写本コレクションとして学術的にも注目を集めている。
Believed to have been gifted by the Thai royal family in1900, the collection is one of the largest of its kind in Japan and has garnered significant scholarly attention.
現在、写本の整理・保存・公開に加え、ローマ字転写や翻訳作業も進められている。2024年には、パーリ語がインド政府により古典言語として認定された。
Efforts are underway to catalog, preserve, and publish the manuscripts, including Romanized transliterations and translations. In 2024, Pāli was officially recognized as a classical language by the Indian government.
大谷大学所蔵の資料は、今後の仏教研究において国際的にも重要な学術資源となることが期待されている。
Otani University’s holdings are expected to serve as key academic resources for international Buddhist studies in the years ahead.
