Exploring Sacred Landscapes of Ancient Japan: Public Symposium at Manyo Cultural Museum
古代日本における水と信仰の関係をテーマとした公開シンポジウムが、2025年8月30日、奈良県高市郡明日香村の奈良県立万葉文化館で開かれる。今回の催しは、同館が実施する共同研究「古代日本の思想文化に関する学際的研究」の成果報告として行われるもので、今年で23回目を迎える。
A public symposium focusing on the relationship between water and belief in ancient Japan will be held on August 30, 2025, at the Nara Prefectural Manyo Cultural Museum in Asuka Village, Nara. This event is part of the museum’s interdisciplinary research project on ancient Japanese thought and culture, now in its 23rd installment.
「続・神と仏がやどる場所――山と水に寄せる古代信仰」と題された本シンポジウムでは、水辺に宿る神仏への信仰や、山寺の成立、龍神伝承などをめぐり、考古学や歴史学、仏教思想の専門家が最新の知見を発表する。古代の儀礼や祭祀における水の役割や、宗教的風景の形成過程を多角的に読み解く内容となる。
Under the theme “Where Gods and Buddhas Dwell, Continued — Ancient Beliefs Rooted in Mountains and Water,” the symposium will feature presentations from experts in archaeology, history, and Buddhist philosophy. Topics will include faith in deities residing near water, the founding of mountain temples, and dragon god legends, offering multifaceted insights into the role of water in ancient rituals and the development of religious landscapes.
講演では、水辺の祭祀をテーマにした基調報告のほか、浄水寺の成立背景、龍神信仰の展開、神仏習合思想と仏教説話の交差など、計6本の報告が予定されている。登壇者には大学や自治体の研究者が名を連ね、最後には登壇者全員による討論も行われる。
The program includes a keynote lecture on waterside rituals and six academic presentations, covering topics such as the foundation of Josuiji Temple, the evolution of dragon deity beliefs, and the interplay between syncretic religious ideas and Buddhist narratives. Scholars from universities and local cultural agencies will participate, concluding with a panel discussion.
会場は奈良県立万葉文化館の講堂。入場は先着150名までで、当日受付で資料代として500円を支払う形式。オンライン配信は行われず、資料の配布も当日参加者に限られる。
The event will take place in the museum’s auditorium. Admission is limited to the first 150 attendees, with a 500-yen fee payable at the door to cover materials. There will be no online streaming, and printed materials will only be distributed to those present.
同館ではこれまでも、万葉集や古代思想を軸にしたシンポジウムを継続してきた。今回は水と山をめぐる信仰を通じて、自然と共にあった古代人の精神文化を照らし出す試みとなる。
The Manyo Cultural Museum has a long history of hosting symposiums centered on the Manyoshu and early Japanese philosophy. This year’s focus on nature-oriented beliefs aims to shed light on the spiritual worldviews of ancient peoples who lived in harmony with their environment.
