A Former Temple in Kochi Transformed into “Tomariina” — A New Hub for Multicultural Exchange in Rural Japan
高知県須崎市・野見湾に位置する空き寺が、地域と世界をつなぐ国際交流の拠点として生まれ変わった。2023年に設立された合同会社Reenaが、宗教施設としての役目を終えた寺を改修し、多文化共生をテーマにした施設「とまり〜な」を運営している。
In the coastal town of Susaki, Kochi Prefecture, a once-vacant temple overlooking Nomi Bay has been reborn as “Tomariina,” a multicultural exchange hub. Launched in 2023 by Reena LLC, the former temple—no longer serving as a religious site—has been renovated and reimagined as a center for intercultural connection.
海外からの訪問者やノマドワーカー、学生、研究者など多様な人々が滞在し、地元住民とともにプロジェクトやイベントに参加している。これまでに漁業体験、竹工芸、地域料理のワークショップやAI講座、デザイン思考のワークショップなど、地域資源と教育を融合させた活動が展開されてきた。
Foreign visitors, digital nomads, students, and researchers now gather at the site, joining local residents in collaborative projects and events. Activities have included fishing workshops, bamboo craft, local culinary experiences, AI seminars, and design thinking workshops—blending community resources with education and innovation.
活動はSNSでも注目を集めており、着物姿でアラビア語や英語を交えて情報発信するスタイルが話題となり、開設から7カ月で3万人を超えるフォロワーを獲得。サウジアラビアやエジプト、インドネシアなど中東圏からの反響も大きい。
The project’s unique social media presence—featuring kimono-clad hosts speaking in Arabic and English—has resonated globally, garnering over 30,000 followers in just seven months. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Indonesia have shown particularly strong interest.
施設内にはハラール対応の調理設備やプレイヤールームも整備され、宗教的多様性に配慮した滞在環境が整えられている。今後はイスラム教徒との文化交流イベントも計画されており、宗教を超えた相互理解の実践の場となることが期待される。
With facilities such as halal-friendly kitchens and prayer rooms, the center offers a welcoming environment for diverse faith communities. Upcoming plans include intercultural events with Muslim participants, aiming to foster deeper mutual understanding across religious boundaries.
また、地元に残る空き家を活用したDIYやリノベーションのプロジェクトも継続中。古い着物や浴衣を活用した循環型のものづくりや、外国人向けの地域商品開発にも取り組んでいる。
The initiative also includes ongoing DIY renovation projects that repurpose local vacant houses. Reena is collecting unused kimono and yukata to create upcycled goods and develop regional products geared toward international visitors—promoting sustainable creativity rooted in Japanese tradition.
「とまり〜な」は、単なる宿泊施設ではなく、空き寺という歴史的資源を再活用しながら地域の知恵や文化を世界と共有するための「拠点」としての役割を担い始めている。
“Tomariina” is evolving beyond a simple lodging facility to become a cultural “hub” that shares local wisdom and traditions with the world by repurposing vacant temples as valuable historical resources.
