[Faith Across Borders] A Lucky Turtle’s Bond — Shigisan Senju-in of Nara Opens a New Door for Bishamonten in Taiwan

1300年の信仰の山・信貴山が動く！
Shigisan, a Sacred Mountain of 1,300 Years, Is Stirring

奈良県北西部、生駒山地の南端にある信貴山は、1300年以上にわたり、毘沙門天（びしゃもんてん）を祀る山として信仰を集めてきた。6世紀末、聖徳太子が物部守屋討伐の戦勝を祈願し、現地に毘沙門天が姿を現したと伝わるこの地は、時代を超えて人々の祈りの場であり続けてきた。ひょっとすると読者の中には、国宝『信貴山縁起絵巻』の舞台だと思い浮かべる方もいるかもしれない。
Located at the southern tip of the Ikoma mountain range in northwestern Nara Prefecture, Mt. Shigi has been venerated for over 1,300 years as a sacred mountain dedicated to Bishamonten. It is said that in the late 6th century, Prince Shōtoku prayed for victory over Mononobe no Moriya, and Bishamonten appeared on the mountain. Ever since, it has remained a place of prayer through the ages. Some readers may remember it as the setting of the National Treasure “Shigisan Engi Emaki.”

この山の中心にあるのが、信貴山真言宗の総本山・朝護孫子寺（ちょうごそんしじ）だ。信ずべき貴い山（信貴山）にある古刹の寺名には「朝廷の安寧と子孫を護（まも）る」という意味が込められ、戦乱の世を生きた人びとの願いが今も息づいている。本尊は毘沙門天。勝運や開運、商売繁盛の神として広く信仰されており、とくに寅年や寅の日には多くの参拝者でにぎわう。
At the heart of this mountain stands Chōgosonshi-ji, the head temple of the Shigisan Shingon school. Its name, meaning “to protect descendants in the morning,” reflects the enduring hopes of those who lived through turbulent times. Bishamonten, the temple’s main deity, is widely worshipped as a god of victory, fortune, and prosperity in business. The grounds become particularly crowded during the Year of the Tiger and on Tiger Days.

その広大な境内に複数の塔頭（たっちゅう）寺院があり、中でも最も古い歴史をもつのが、今回の話題の舞台となる信貴山大本山千手院。創建は、延喜年間（901年～923年）と伝えられている。
Within its spacious grounds stand several tatchū (sub-temples), the oldest of which is Senju-in, the focal point of this article. It is believed to have been founded during the Engi era (901–923).

How a Lucky Turtle Amulet Sparked a Bond with Taiwan

実は昨年来、この千手院が台湾とのあいだで新たな信仰の交流を進めている。現場でその動きを推進しているのは、長年にわたり宗務を担当してきた執事の柿本真定（かきもと・しんじょう）師だ。
Since last year, Senju-in has been forging new religious ties with Taiwan. Leading this effort on the ground is Rev. Shinjō Kakimoto, the temple’s long-serving administrator.

はじまりは思いがけないところにあった。千手院で授与している金運祈願の「銭亀堂のお守り（注）」の写真がSNSで広まり、それをきっかけに台湾からの参拝者が次第に増えていったのだ。
It all began in an unexpected way. A photo of the temple’s lucky turtle amulet for financial success went viral on social media, prompting a rise in visitors from Taiwan.

「あるとき、25人くらいの団体が一斉に金と銀の銭亀を求めて来られたんです。金銀一式5万円もするのに、皆さん全員迷わず求められて……。それが毎月のようになって、最初は本当に驚きました」
“At one point, a group of about 25 people came all at once to purchase both gold and silver turtles. The gold and silver set cost 50,000 yen, but they didn’t hesitate. Then it became a monthly occurrence—I was truly astonished,” recalls Kakimoto.

「これは一過性の流行ではない、ご縁の兆しかもしれない」。そう感じた柿本師は、台湾からの問い合わせや増えていく参拝者とのやりとりを重ねるうちに、その背後に何かがあると感じ始めた。
“This didn’t feel like a passing trend—it felt like the beginning of a karmic connection.” As inquiries and visits from Taiwan continued, Kakimoto began to sense a deeper meaning behind them.

Zenigame-dō — A Power Spot for Financial Fortune
信貴山大本山千手院の境内にある「銭亀堂」は、金運招福の善神・銭亀善神（ぜにがめぜんじん）を祀る全国でも珍しいお堂。
Zenigame-dō, located within the grounds of Shigisan Senju-in, is a rare temple hall in Japan dedicated to Zenigame Zenshin, a benevolent deity said to bring financial fortune.
千手院の貫主が山岳修行中に霊夢で感得した神霊を祀るもので、信仰の象徴として建立された。
The current abbot is said to have encountered the spirit of Zenigame Zenshin in a sacred dream during ascetic training in the mountains. The hall was built to enshrine this vision as a symbol of faith.
お守りと財布を石臼にのせ、「南無銭亀善神」と唱えながら回すと、金運の流れが巡り始めると伝えられる。
Visitors place a special charm and their wallet on a stone mill, turning it clockwise while chanting “Namu Zenigame Zenshin.” This ritual is believed to set the flow of financial fortune in motion.
境内には“壱億円札”入りの御守も用意され、口コミやSNSを通じて話題に。参拝者の中には「宝くじに当たった」「業績が回復した」と語る人も多いという。
Amulets containing a symbolic “100 million yen bill” are also available. Word has spread through social media, with visitors claiming outcomes like lottery wins and business turnarounds.

台中の道教寺院と共鳴する祈り
Resonant Faith: Meeting a Taoist Temple in Taichung

やがてその銭亀をめぐる“ご縁”は、偶然の訪問を超えて、信仰のつながりへと変わっていった。ある信者さんから、台中市にある道教の寺院、九天玄女総廟（きゅうてんげんにょそうびょう）を紹介された。
Eventually, this turtle-linked connection evolved from happenstance into spiritual kinship. One devotee introduced Kakimoto to Kyūten Genyo Sōbyō, a Taoist temple in Taichung.

「最初は道教の寺院だと聞いて正直とまどいました。でも、調べてみると、道教でも毘沙門天（多聞天）が北方の守護神として信仰されていることがわかったんです」
“At first, I was honestly hesitant when I heard it was a Taoist temple. But after looking it up, I found that Bishamonten—Tamonten—is also revered in Taoism as the guardian of the north.”

柿本師はそう語り、信仰のかたちこそ異なっても、祈りの対象に重なりがあったことが次の一歩につながったと振り返る。
Kakimoto reflects that although the form of faith differed, the shared focus of prayer helped him take the next step forward.

台中に分院を開設、海を越える祈り
A Branch Temple in Taichung: Spreading Bishamonten’s Spirit

時は満ちて昨年2024年6月、千手院は紹介を受けた九天玄女総廟に分院を設け、新たに造立された毘沙門天像を分霊した。この廟では中国神話の女神・九天玄女を祀っているが、台湾では毘沙門天（多聞天）への信仰も根づいており、双方の神格を受け入れられる宗教的な土壌があったことが、その後の信仰の結びつきにつながっていった。
In 2024, Senju-in established a branch temple at Kyūten Genyo Sōbyō and enshrined a newly crafted statue of Bishamonten. The temple venerates Kyūten Genyo, a goddess from Chinese mythology, while belief in Bishamonten is also deeply rooted in Taiwan—creating a shared religious foundation that accommodates both traditions.

同年11月、分院に集った50人余の参列者に見守られるなか、毘沙門天像の開眼法要が厳かに執り行われた。そして今年2025年3月には、九天玄女総廟の檀家ら約20人が「里帰り参拝」として信貴山を訪れ、毘沙門天像を携えて護摩供養に参列した。
In November of that year, a consecration ceremony for the statue was held, drawing more than 300 attendees. On March 19, 2025, about 20 parishioners from Kyūten Genyo Sōbyō visited Shigisan on a “homecoming pilgrimage,” bringing the statue with them and participating in a goma fire ritual.

宗務所と分霊所──現地に根づく信仰の場
Formalizing a Presence: The Religious Office and Bunreijo

台湾での布教や日台交流を目的として、分院の開設とともに奉賛会が発足し、現在は千手院の組織内に「台湾宗務所」として正式に位置づけられた。また、分院も宗教活動の深化にともない、「分霊所」へと再編された。現地では、信仰の実践を支える拠点づくりも少しずつ整えられつつある。先月2025年6月には、分院から分霊所となったことを記念して分霊所開設法要も営まれた。
With the establishment of the branch temple, a supporting association was also formed to promote missionary activities in Taiwan and facilitate Japan–Taiwan religious exchange. This body has since been formally designated as the “Taiwan Religious Affairs Office” within the organizational structure of Senju-in. In addition, the branch itself was reorganized as a bunsureisho (divided-spirit sanctuary) as religious activities deepened. Efforts to build a base for local spiritual practice are steadily progressing. Last month, in June, a consecration ceremony was held on-site to commemorate the branch temple’s transition into a bunsureisho.

「制度的には分霊所というかたちになりましたので、現地でも修行ができる環境を整えていくのが理想ですね。今後も毎年、こちらから護摩供養に赴く予定ですが、いずれは、台湾の中で信仰を支える僧侶が育つよう、その育成にも関わっていけたらと考えています」
“We’ve formally structured it as a bunsureijo, and hope to build a goma hall. Ideally, we’d like to create an environment where people in Taiwan can engage in spiritual training. For now, we’ll continue traveling there annually for goma rituals, but eventually, we’d like to help train local clergy in Taiwan who can uphold the faith and conduct rituals on their own.”

柿本師はそう語り、宗教活動の持続的な展開を見据えている。
Kakimoto shared this vision, aiming for sustainable development of their religious activities.

The Zenigame Community Center: Linking Faith and Community

今後は、台北や台東など、台湾各地にも分霊所を広げていく構想があるという。さらに、信者や現地の事業者と連携し、信仰を軸に人と人がつながる場として「銭亀コミュニティセンター」を設ける計画も進行中だ。日本と台湾の企業や文化活動をつなぎ、現地ビジネスの紹介や中小企業の技術協力などへ展開を図る動きも見られる。
Plans are also underway to expand the network of bunsureijo (divided-spirit sanctuaries) to other areas of Taiwan, including Taipei and Taitung. In addition, a project known as the “Zenigame Community Center” is being developed in collaboration with local believers and businesspeople to create a space where people can connect through shared faith. The center aims to foster practical ties between Japanese and Taiwanese enterprises and cultural initiatives, including support for local businesses and technical collaboration among small and medium-sized companies.

たとえばすでに現在、奈良県立医科大学の研究者が特許を持つ「軟骨伝導技術」を応用したイヤホン（補聴器）の台湾展開に向けたマッチングが進行中だ。信仰を通じたご縁が、新たな交流やイノベーションを後押しする動きにつながっている。
At present, the Zenigame Community Center is helping coordinate the introduction of cartilage conduction earphones patented by researchers at Nara Medical University for the Taiwanese market. Faith-based connections are contributing to a growing movement that encourages new forms of exchange and innovation.

銭亀と毘沙門天が結ぶ日台の文化の絆
Cultural Ties Between Japan and Taiwan Forged by a Lucky Turtle and Bishamonten

「初めから何かを計画して仕掛けたというより、すべて毘沙門天に導かれたような感覚なんです」。柿本師はそう語り、これまでの歩みを振り返った。あくまで教えの実践として一つひとつの縁を大切にしてきたからこそ、宗教の枠を超えて文化や人のつながりが広がっていくのだろう。
“It wasn’t something I planned or initiated—it feels as though I was simply guided by Bishamonten,” Kakimoto said, looking back on the journey. By treating each encounter as a sincere practice of the teachings, he believes connections have naturally extended beyond religion to include culture and people.

「ご縁で始まり、ご縁で広がってきました。金儲けではなく、人儲け。寺にとっていちばん大切なのは、やっぱり人とのつながりなんです」。その言葉には、何よりも人とのつながりを大切にしてきた千手院のあり方が、静かに込められていた。
“It all began through personal bonds, and those bonds helped it grow. It’s not about making money, it’s about making people. Each of his words carried the quiet weight of someone who has long upheld the work of faith.”

こうした取り組みの先には、信貴山真言宗としての将来的な展開も見据えられている。千手院の活動は、宗門全体にとっての先行的な実践として位置づけられており、今後は総本山・朝護孫子寺としての国際的な宗教交流へとつながっていく可能性もある。
These developments may signal a broader future for the entire Shigisan Shingon sect. Senju-in’s initiatives are seen as pioneering efforts, potentially paving the way for international religious exchange led by the head temple, Chōgosonshi-ji.

信貴山真言宗大本山千手院の貫主であり、宗門の中でも要職を担う田中眞瑞（たなか・しんずい）猊下は、台湾とのつながりの広がりを次のように受けとめている。
Shinzui Tanaka, abbot of Senju-in and a senior figure within the Shigisan Shingon tradition, offered his reflections on the expanding connection with Taiwan:

「毘沙門天の教えがこうして海を越え、ご縁が新たなご縁を呼びながら、台湾の方々の心にも届いていることを、何よりありがたく感じています。これを機に、ますます人と人との交流が深まっていってくれればと思います」

“I feel deeply grateful that the teachings of Bishamonten have crossed the sea and found their way into the hearts of people in Taiwan—one bond leading naturally to another. I truly hope this will lead to even deeper exchanges between our communities.”

銭亀をきっかけに生まれた信仰のつながりは、偶然に見えて、仏縁の導きによるものだったのかもしれない。毘沙門天の教えが海を越えて人々の心に届き、信仰が人を結び、文化を育て、平和の灯となる。そんな時代の扉が、いま開かれようとしている。
What began with a coin turtle as a symbol of faith may not have been mere coincidence, but rather a path guided by karmic ties. The teachings of Bishamonten are reaching across the sea, connecting people, nurturing culture, and becoming a light of peace. The door to such an era is now beginning to open.

台湾・九天玄女総廟と奈良・信貴山千手院の提携を記念して交わされたプレートには、「神威四海」――神仏の力が国や宗教の枠を超えて四方世界に及ぶことを願う言葉が刻まれている。両寺院の友好と協力を象徴し、信仰を通じた平和と繁栄への祈りが込められている。
To commemorate their partnership, a plaque was exchanged between Kyūten Genyo Sōbyō in Taiwan and Shigisan Senju-in in Nara. Engraved with the phrase Shingi Shikai—a wish for the sacred powers of gods and buddhas to extend across all corners of the world—the plaque symbolizes the two temples’ friendship and shared prayer for peace and prosperity beyond national and religious boundaries.
