In Japan, where 99.97% of the dead are cremated, a tiny fraction continue to seek burial. Japanese Burial: A Reportage, Expanded Edition (Shobunsha, ¥2,200), by freelance journalist Kantaro Suzuki, is a five-year investigation into the people, communities, and beliefs that resist cremation in favor of the earth.
本書の出発点は、2020年に大分県日出町で起きたイスラム系住民と地域住民による土葬墓地をめぐる対立。そこから著者は、ムスリム移民、在日コリアン、神職、土葬の復権を求める市民など、さまざまな人々が土葬に込める思いと、その背景にある文化・宗教・社会的課題に迫っていく。
The book begins with a 2020 conflict in Hiji, Oita Prefecture, where Muslim immigrants sought to build a burial cemetery, triggering strong local opposition. From there, Suzuki interviews Muslim residents, Korean-Japanese Buddhists, traditional Shinto priests, and ordinary citizens—all of whom seek a return to burial for reasons of faith, dignity, or heritage.
日本における土葬は「過去のもの」とされがちだが、本書はそれを“現在進行形”のテーマとして捉え直す。土葬が合法でありながら忌避される構造、反対運動の心理、地域と宗教の摩擦、行政の対応、そして信仰と死の尊厳をめぐる問い。その一つひとつを、現場の声とともに記録する。

In the new expanded chapter, the author clearly describes the ongoing Zainichi Korean burial cemetery project at Koraidera Temple in Kyoto and how local public opinion was swayed through the Hinode mayoral election held in 2024. The weight of the words exchanged at the scene of “living and dying”, not limited to administrative documents and legal issues, can be seen between the lines of the book.
