Temple-specific LINE app “Shugo-no-LINE” expands to more than 70 temples A new form of connection between parishioners and local communities
The digital infrastructure connecting temples, parishioners, and local communities via LINE is quietly expanding. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo), a company that supports temples, announced that the number of temples that have subscribed to its temple-specific LINE application, “Shugo-no-LINE,” has surpassed 70 temples. In the year since its release, the number of subscriptions has increased 3.5-fold and the number of general user registrations has increased 3.1-fold. The system of using LINE, which is familiar even to the elderly, to deepen the connection between temples and their parishioners is bearing fruit.
“Shugo-no-LINE” is an all-in-one application that provides information on Buddhist memorial services and memorial service applications with parishioners, as well as digital temple newsletters, video Dharma talks, and stamp rallies. It offers a full range of functions to support temple practice and religious life, including automatic notification of the anniversary of death, consultation on Buddhist affairs, acceptance of prayers, and management of visitation records. With a low withdrawal rate of 5.1%, it is said to be effective in creating ongoing contact with the temple.
Of particular interest is the creation of connections with younger generations through digital certificates of merit and “temple fortune”. Through intergenerational connections, temples are being reevaluated as “local information hubs. In addition, cooperation among parishes is progressing, and content such as the “Nembutsu Diary” is being sent out on LINE in the Saitama parish of the Jodo sect.
The company will continue to support the introduction of IT at temples and hold study sessions called “Terakoya Shugo” with a view to spreading the service to the 77,000 temples throughout Japan. LINE is not merely a means of communication, but is intended to play a role as a “spiritual infrastructure” that will help Buddhist relationships take root in the modern age.
