Kyoto connoisseurs’ picks for the best hanami views and the best spots for cherry blossom viewing! Cherry blossoms at temples and shrines capture the heart

京都・仁和寺の御室桜
フタバ株式会社(名古屋市)は、京都での花見経験者153人を対象にアンケート調査を行い、人気の観桜スポットや時間帯の傾向を集計した。調査は2025年1月16日から30日までインターネット上で実施された。
Futaba Corporation (Nagoya, Japan) conducted a survey of 153 people who have experienced cherry blossom viewing in Kyoto and compiled data on trends in popular cherry blossom viewing spots and times. The survey was conducted online from January 16 to 30, 2025.
調査によると、最も多くの支持を集めた花見の名所は円山公園、鴨川沿い、嵐山であった。円山公園は八坂神社や知恩院に隣接し、「祇園しだれ桜」が象徴的な存在となっている。公園全体の開放感や立地の良さも評価されている。
According to the survey, the most popular Hanami viewing spots were Maruyama Park, along the Kamo River, and Arashiyama. Maruyama Park is adjacent to Yasaka Shrine and Chion-in Temple, and the “Gion weeping cherry tree” is a symbol of the park. The openness of the park as a whole and its location are also highly regarded.
鴨川沿いでは、三条大橋周辺や北山大橋付近の「半木の道」などが挙げられた。川に沿って咲く桜と水の流れがつくり出す景観が特徴で、ゆったりと散策を楽しむ場として人気が高い。
Along the Kamo River, the “Half-tree Path” near Sanjo Ohashi Bridge and Kitayama Ohashi Bridge were mentioned. The cherry blossoms along the river and the scenery created by the flowing water are popular as a place to enjoy a relaxing stroll.
嵐山では、渡月橋と桜、山並みの組み合わせが「京都らしい風景」として評価され、豊かな自然と歴史的な街並みの調和が支持された。
In Arashiyama, the combination of the Wataratsuki Bridge, cherry blossoms, and mountains was rated as a “typical Kyoto landscape,” and the harmony of the rich nature and historical townscape was supported.
寺社に関しては、平野神社(京都市北区)と仁和寺(右京区)が高く評価された。平野神社は約60種・400本の桜を有し、「桜の社」とも呼ばれる。特に早咲きの魁桜(さきがけざくら)が知られ、夜間にはライトアップも行われている。
Regarding temples and shrines, Hirano Shrine (Kita-ku, Kyoto) and Ninna-ji Temple (Ukyo-ku, Kyoto) received high marks. Hirano Shrine is also called the “Shrine of Cherry Blossoms” because it has 400 cherry trees of about 60 varieties. It is especially known for its early-blooming sakura (Sakigake-zakura), which are illuminated at night.
仁和寺は世界遺産に登録された臨済宗の寺院で、名物の「御室桜」は背丈が低く、花を間近に見ることができる点が特徴とされた。五重塔を背景に咲く桜の景観は、「京都らしさ」を象徴するものとして複数の回答が寄せられた。
Ninna-ji Temple is a Rinzai sect temple registered as a World Heritage site. The famous Omuro-zakura, or Omuro-zakura, is characterized by its short stature, which allows visitors to see the blossoms up close. The view of cherry blossoms blooming against the backdrop of the five-story pagoda was selected by several respondents as symbolic of “Kyoto’s character.
また、穴場スポットとしては、京都御所、宇治市植物公園、醍醐寺、山科疏水、原谷苑などが挙げられた。いずれも混雑が比較的少なく、静かに桜を楽しめる場所として評価されている。原谷苑は個人所有の庭園で、春のみ一般公開され、多様な品種の桜が一斉に開花する光景が支持された。
The Kyoto Imperial Palace, Uji City Botanical Garden, Daigoji Temple, Yamashina Sosui Canal, and Haradani-en Garden were also cited as good spots for viewing cherry blossoms. All of these spots were highly rated as relatively uncrowded and quiet places to enjoy the cherry blossoms. Haratani-en, a privately owned garden, is open to the public only in spring, and was favored for the spectacle of various varieties of cherry trees blooming all at once.
花見に適した時間帯についての質問では、「昼」が最多の64票を集めた。次いで「夜」が42票、「朝」が36票。「昼」は明るい日差しの下で桜の色が映える点や、安全面が理由に挙げられた。「夜」はライトアップによる非日常的な雰囲気、「朝」は人が少ない時間帯であることが評価された。
When asked about the best time of day for cherry blossom viewing, “daytime” received the most votes with 64. Night“ received 42 votes, followed by ”morning” with 36 votes. Daytime” was cited as the best time to view cherry blossoms in bright sunlight and for safety reasons. Night“ was selected for the extraordinary atmosphere created by the lights, while ”morning” was selected for the time of day when there are fewer people.
花見中のトラブルとしては、観光地の混雑、満員の公共交通機関、鴨川沿いでのトンビによる食べ物への接近などが報告された。一方で、混雑時に地元住民が荷物を持ってくれたなど、親切な対応に触れたとの声もあった。
As for problems during hanami, respondents reported crowding at tourist spots, packed public transportation, and the proximity of dragonflies to food along the Kamogawa River. On the other hand, some said they were touched by the kindness of local residents who helped them with their luggage during the crowds.
この調査では、京都の観桜スポットにおいて、寺社が今なお高い人気を誇り、文化的背景と桜の景観が一体となった場に多くの関心が寄せられていることが明らかになった。
The survey revealed that temples and shrines remain highly popular among Kyoto’s cherry blossom viewing spots, and that there is much interest in places that combine cultural backgrounds and cherry blossom scenery.
