Izu 88 Pilgrimage, a revival of pilgrimage from and to Atami, Edo Period Sacred Sites to Modern Worshippers
江戸時代に信仰を集めた伊豆八十八ヶ所霊場の巡礼文化が、現代版として再興されている。首都圏から日帰り可能な巡礼コース「伊豆88遍路」は、全12回のプログラムで八十八ヶ所を結願できるよう設計されている。
The pilgrimage culture of the 88 sacred sites in Izu that attracted faith in the Edo Period is being revived in a modern version. The “Izu 88 Pilgrimage,” a one-day pilgrimage course that can be taken from the Tokyo metropolitan area, is designed to allow visitors to complete 88 pilgrimage sites in a total of 12 programs.
伊豆霊場は、江戸期に多くの参拝者が訪れた由緒ある信仰地。明治期の納経帳の発見を機に再調査が進み、霊場文化の再構築が図られている。現在は、かつての札所をめぐりながら、道中の景観や郷土文化に触れられる地域周遊型企画として展開中である。
Izu sacred sites are historic places of worship that were visited by many worshippers during the Edo period. The discovery of sutra books in the Meiji period (1868-1912) led to a reexamination of the area and the reconstruction of the sacred site culture. Currently, the project is being developed as a regional excursion program that allows visitors to experience the scenery and local culture along the way while touring the former sacred sites.
4月開催の第4回では、伊東市から東伊豆町にかけての10カ寺を巡拝。城ヶ崎海岸や稲取温泉などの名所、地元の金目鯛料理も楽しめる構成となっている。
The fourth itinerary, to be held in April, will visit 10 temples in the area from Ito City to Higashi Izu Town. The tour also includes visits to famous sites such as Jogasaki Beach and Inatori Hot Springs, as well as local kinmedai (sea bream) cuisine.
巡拝は専用の納経帳を用い、すべての札所を巡ると修善寺（第88番札所）で「結願証」が発行される。車での参加や宿泊者向けの記念特典なども用意され、巡礼と観光の両立を図っている。
A special sutra book will be used for the pilgrimage, and a “Certificate of Conclusion” will be issued at Shuzenji Temple (the 88th temple) after visiting all the temples. Special offers are also provided for those who participate by car and those who stay overnight, to make the pilgrimage both a sightseeing and a pilgrimage experience.
