醍醐寺に奉納〜再生の象徴「ど根性桜」を見守る童地蔵　

Warabe Jizo, a symbol of rebirth, watches over the “Dokonjo Cherry Tree” Dedicated to Daigoji Temple

京都市伏見区の総本山醍醐寺で、2018年の台風被害から再生を遂げた桜の木「ど根性桜」にちなみ、京都の仏師・野田康道氏（八瀬造佛所）より童地蔵が奉納された。奉納は2025年3月25日付で行われた。

A Warabe-jizo was dedicated by Kyoto-based Buddhist master Yasumichi Noda (Yase Zobutsujo) at the head temple Daigoji Temple in Fushimi, Kyoto, in honor of a cherry tree, Dokonjo Cherry Blossom, that has regenerated after being damaged by a typhoon in 2018. The dedication was dated March 25, 2025.

同寺の霊宝館前に立つソメイヨシノは、京都府内で最古級とされる樹齢120年超の個体。2018年の台風21号で根元から倒され、幹も大きく裂けるなど深刻な損傷を受けたが、翌年には数輪の花を咲かせたことから「ど根性桜」と呼ばれるようになった。桜守や専門家の手による養生を重ね、現在では毎年春になると最も早く多くの花を咲かせる木の一つに数えられている。

The Someiyoshino tree standing in front of the temple’s Reihokan is one of the oldest in Kyoto Prefecture at over 120 years old; it was seriously damaged by Typhoon No. 21 in 2018, toppling it from the base and splitting the trunk wide open, but the following year it bloomed several flowers, earning it the name “Dokonjo Sakura” (meaning “the rooted cherry tree”). After repeated cures by cherry blossom guardians and experts, the tree is now one of the earliest trees to bloom every spring.

奉納された童地蔵は、同寺の桜の再生を象徴する存在として、子どもたちの安全や地域の平穏を願って建立された。2025年の干支「乙巳（きのとみ）」が「再生・復興」を象徴することにも因む。地蔵像は、桜の根元近くに据えられ、訪れた参拝者がその姿を探しながら静かに祈りを捧げる場となっている。

The Jizo statue was erected to symbolize the rebirth of the temple’s cherry trees and to wish for the safety of children and peace in the community, and also because the Chinese zodiac sign for 2025, “Kinotomi,” symbolizes “rebirth and restoration. The Jizo statue is placed near the base of the cherry tree, where visitors can look for it and pray silently.
