The exhibition “Shokokuji Temple: History of Beauty through the Phoenixes of the Kinkaku and Ginkaku” opened at the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts (Taito-ku, Tokyo), presenting masterpieces related to Shokokuji Temple in Kyoto. The exhibition will run through May 25. The exhibition commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Shokokuji Jotenkaku Art Museum, and introduces the culture and art of Zen temples from the Muromachi period (1333-1573) to the early modern period.
The centerpiece of the exhibition will be a group of works by painter Ito Jakuchu, which were discovered by Shokokuji Temple. The exhibition will feature representative works by Jakuchu, such as “Grapes and Small Birds”, a sliding door painting for the Great Shoin of Rokuonji Temple (Kinkakuji Temple), “Bamboo and Tiger”, and “Turtle”, all of which are rich in realism and compositional beauty. There is also an inscription showing the relationship between Jakuchu and his patron, Baiso Kenjyo, the abbot of Shokokuji Temple, and other materials that reveal the character of Jakuchu himself.
In addition, a variety of works that flourished at the Zen temple are also on display, including Hasegawa Tohaku’s “Hagiwara Folding Screen”, Maruyama Okyo’s “Shichinan Shichifukuzu”, and ink paintings by the Kano school, Sesshu, Josetsu, and other artists. In the second half of the exhibition (from April 29), Sesshu’s “Bishamonten (Bishamonten)” and other works will be on display.
Shokokuji Temple, founded in 1382 at the behest of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, is the head temple of the Shokokuji School of the Rinzai Sect. The temple is also home to Rokuonji (commonly known as Kinkakuji) and Jishoji (Ginkakuji), and has been deeply involved in art and culture. This exhibition sheds light on the role of Zen in art history, and is designed to decipher the relationship between Zen and beauty from multiple perspectives.
