A Gifu Journey to Temples Related to Enku Enku JR Tokai “Enku no Ashiato” now being developed
Enku (1632-1695) was a monk who vowed to sculpt 120,000 sacred images of Buddha during the Edo period and traveled extensively in asceticism and proselytizing. The powerful yet simple “Enku-butsu” still captures the hearts of many people today because of its spirituality and originality. Tokai Railway Company (JR Tokai) has launched the “Enku’s Footprints” campaign in Gifu Prefecture, the birthplace and final resting place of Enku. This is a special project to retrace Enku’s footsteps in the face of Buddhist statues.
The campaign is led by actor Arata Iura. Visitors can experience a “limited voice rally” in the Tokaido Shinkansen trains and at three temples associated with Enku (Hida Senkoji Temple (Takayama City), Onsenji Temple (Gero City), and Mirokuji Temple (Seki City)), where Enku’s Buddha is introduced with narration by Iura. The program is supervised by art historian Yuji Yamashita. The event will run until June 30.
In addition, there will also be experience-based sightseeing plans in conjunction with temples, such as special viewing of Enku Buddha, meditation, and zazen (Zen meditation). For example, at Hida Senkoji Temple, visitors will be guided by the temple’s abbot to view 63 Enku Buddha statues and have the opportunity to meditate in the main hall. At Onsen-ji Temple, visitors can actually touch and hold Buddhist statues. At Maitreya Temple, after viewing the Enku Buddha, which is usually closed to the public, visitors can try their hand at Enku carving at the Enku Museum in Seki City.
There are also a variety of original goods available. Mokkiru stands (four types in total) made of Gifu cypress are available at each facility. At Onsen-ji Temple, visitors can also try their hand at selling advance copies of paper-cut red seals featuring “Ugajin,” the Enku Buddha.
Enku was a Buddhist priest and ascetic. A trip to Gifu in his footsteps will go beyond mere sightseeing to an experience that touches the origin of prayer and creativity.
