仏教といえば、日本では葬儀や文化財、観光地としてのイメージが先行しがちだ。だが東南アジアでは今なお、ブッダの教えは「現役」であり、苦しみを超えるための修行として生きている。著者は2008年からミャンマーで出家し、「律」の厳格な実践を重んじる森の寺院や、社会貢献と瞑想を融合させた福祉寺院での生活を通して、仏教の「再解釈と実践」の姿を目の当たりにしていく。
In Japan, Buddhism is often associated with funerals, art, and historical temples. But in Southeast Asia, the Buddha’s teachings are still very much alive—shaping daily life, offering paths to liberation, and being lived through rigorous monastic discipline. Kuramoto, who ordained in Myanmar in 2008, explores two strikingly different temples: one a forest monastery adhering strictly to the Vinaya (monastic code), the other a socially engaged meditation center focused on altruism and communal care.
本書が面白いのは、帰国後、著者自身が京都で新たに設立した寺院「寳幢寺（ほうどうじ）」における経営実践も記録の対象としている点だ。僧侶であり、研究者であり、経営者であるという三重の視点から語られる「仏教経営」のフィールドワークは、理論と実践、制度と信仰、地域社会と宗教の関係性を見つめ直す格好の素材を提供する。
What makes this book particularly compelling is that the fieldwork doesn’t end abroad. Upon returning to Japan, Kuramoto founded Hōdōji, a new temple in Kyoto that attempts to embody a form of Buddhism suited to contemporary society—free from the traditional parishioner (danka) system. As both monk and researcher, Kuramoto offers a rare triple perspective: practitioner, scholar, and administrator.
