Nihon Bukkyo Gakuin Makes “Nanden Daizo Kyō” Available Free of Charge Japanese Translation of Pāli Buddhist Scriptures, 30,000 pages on the Web
日本仏教学院（東京都）は、パーリ仏典を日本語に翻訳した『南伝大蔵経』全65巻（70冊）の全文を、同学院ウェブサイト上で無料公開した。ブッダの誕生日とされる4月8日にあわせて公開が始まり、誰でも自由に閲覧できる。
Nihon Bukkyo Gakuin (Tokyo) has made the entire text of the 65 volumes (70 books) of the “Nanden Daizo Kyō（The Nanden Daizang Sutra）,” a Japanese translation of the Pāli Buddhist scriptures, available for free on the school’s website. The release coincides with Buddha’s birthday, April 8, and is open to all.
『南伝大蔵経』は、スリランカ、タイ、ミャンマーなどに伝わる南方上座部仏教（テーラワーダ）の三蔵（経・律・論）を、日本語に翻訳した経典群。昭和初期に刊行されたもので、すでに著作権保護期間は終了している。日本国内では入手困難とされていたが、今回の公開により、仏教研究や個人学習に活用できる環境が整えられた。
The Nanden Daizang Sutra is a collection of sutras translated into Japanese from the Three Treasures (sutra, law, and treatise) of Southern Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, and other countries. Published in the early Showa period (early 20th century), the copyright protection period has already expired. The sutras have been difficult to obtain in Japan, but with their recent release, an environment has been created in which they can be used for Buddhist research and private study.
本来、国立国会図書館によるデジタル公開が検討されたが、かつての出版社からの申し出により停止された経緯があった。日本仏教学院は、「知的財産として自由に学べる環境を整えるべき」との方針から、独自に蔵書を公開したという。
Originally, digital release by the National Diet Library was considered, but was halted due to an offer from a former publisher. The Nihon Bukkyo Gakuin decided to scan and release the books on its own, based on its policy that the library should provide an environment where people can freely study the books as intellectual property.
同学院ではこのほかにも、仏教の基本を体系的に学べる通信講座や、74,000人以上が受講した無料メール講座なども提供。ブッダの教えを実際に学べる場を広げていく意向を示している。
The institute also offers correspondence courses to systematically learn the basics of Buddhism, as well as free e-mail courses that have been taken by over 74,000 people. The institute intends to expand opportunities to actually study Buddha’s teachings.
