■Special Exihibition “Japanese Gorgeous Armors The Eleganceof the SAMURAI“ to be Held at Kasuga Taisha Shrine Two National Treasures of Great Armor will be exhibited in parallel for the first time in history.
春日大社国宝殿（奈良市）で2025年7月5日から9月7日まで、特別展「究極の国宝 大鎧展～日本の工芸技術の粋を集めた甲冑の美の世界～」が開催される。日本に現存する国宝の甲冑17点のうち、約半数となる8点が一堂に集まる大規模展覧会となる。
A special exhibition, ”Japanese Gorgeous Armors The Eleganceof the SAMURAI: The World of Beauty in Armor, a Collection of the Best of Japanese Craftsmanship” will be held from July 5 to September 7, 2025 at the Kasuga Taisha National Treasure Hall (Nara City). This large-scale exhibition will bring together eight of Japan’s 17 existing national treasure pieces of armor, about half of the total number of armor pieces in Japan.
とりわけ注目されるのは、春日大社所蔵の国宝《赤糸威大鎧（竹虎雀飾）》と、櫛引八幡宮（青森県八戸市）所蔵の国宝《赤糸威大鎧（菊一文字）》の展示で、両者が並列で公開されるのは史上初の試みとなる。両作品は「現存甲冑の双璧」と称され、金工技術や染織の粋を極めた装飾が特徴とされている。
Of particular note are the national treasures “Great Armor with Red Thread Vestige (Take-Tora-Jaku)” from the Kasuga Taisha Shrine and “Great Armor with Red Thread Vestige (Kiku Ichimonji)” from the Kushibiki Hachiman Shrine (Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture), which will be exhibited side by side for the first time in history. Both pieces of armor are known as “the two greatest surviving examples of armor,” and are characterized by their superb metalworking and dyed and woven decorations.
大鎧は平安時代後期から南北朝時代にかけて、騎射戦を行う上級武士の正装として製作されたもので、その精緻な意匠と素材技術から「総合工芸」とも評される。春日大社にはこれに関連する国宝の大鎧が複数伝わっており、同展では《赤糸威大鎧（梅鶯飾）》や《黒韋威胴丸》などの展示も予定されている。
The great armor was made from the late Heian period (794-1185) to the Nanbokucho period (1392-1644) as formal wear for high-ranking warriors engaged in cavalry battles. The Kasuga Taisha Shrine has several large pieces of armor related to this armor, which are national treasures. The exhibition will include “Great Armor with Red Thread Vestige (Umeyushikari)” and “Black Wei Wei Domaru” (Domaru), etc.
展覧会は前期（7月5日～8月3日）と後期（8月9日～9月7日）に分かれ、8月4日～8日は展示替えのため休館。
The exhibition will be divided into the first half (July 5-August 3) and the second half (August 9-September 7), and will be closed August 4-8 for exhibition changes.
春日大社は全国の春日神社の総本社として知られ、世界遺産「古都奈良の文化財」の構成資産にも含まれている。本展は、春日大社に伝わる武家文化と工芸の歴史をひもとき、日本の美術技術の精華を広く紹介する貴重な機会となる。
Kasuga Taisha is known as the head shrine of all Kasuga shrines in Japan and is included in the World Heritage list of “Cultural Properties of Ancient Nara. This exhibition will be a rare opportunity to trace the history of samurai culture and crafts handed down at Kasuga Taisha Shrine and to introduce the essence of Japanese art and technology to a wide audience.
