■Walking with Head Priests: Cultural Heritage Project Revives 1,300-Year-Old Saigoku Pilgrimage Route in Shiga
日本最古の巡礼道とされる「西国三十三所観音巡礼」を次世代に継承するため、滋賀県内の札所4寺（岩間寺、石山寺、三井寺〈園城寺〉、観音正寺）の住職とともに巡る特別ウォーキングイベント「Self Journey」が、2025年5月より始まる。
In May 2025, a new cultural heritage initiative titled “Self Journey” will launch, inviting participants to walk the historic Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage Route alongside head priests from four key temples in Shiga Prefecture: Iwama-dera, Ishiyama-dera, Miidera (Onjo-ji), and Kannonsho-ji.
この取り組みは、日本遺産「西国三十三所観音巡礼」と連携した文化発信プロジェクト【HISTORY collabo ID】の一環で、巡礼の原点とその精神性を現代に再解釈し、一般参加者に“歩く文化体験”として届けるもの。各回のウォーキングでは、通常非公開エリアの特別拝観、現地限定のNFTアート授与、住職の案内による歴史解説などが行われる。
The event is part of the “HISTORY collabo ID” project, which collaborates with the Japan Heritage-designated Saigoku Kannon Route to preserve and promote the 1,300-year-old pilgrimage tradition. Participants will receive guided temple tours from resident priests, enjoy special access to usually restricted areas, and be gifted original NFT art commemorating their visit.
第1回は5月24日に岩間寺から石山寺を巡るコースでスタート。以降、5月31日に石山寺〜三井寺、6月7日に観音正寺周辺のコースが予定されている。定員は各回20名限定。
The first walking session begins on May 24 from Iwama-dera to Ishiyama-dera, followed by two additional walks on May 31 and June 7. Each session is limited to 20 participants.
加えて、歩行困難な人や遠方参加者向けにデジタル参拝プランも用意。スマートフォンでのNFT取得や、飲食店優待のある「デジタルパス」により、巡礼の魅力に幅広く触れることが可能となっている。
To accommodate those who cannot attend in person, digital pilgrimage passes are available, including access to virtual content, exclusive NFT tokens, and local restaurant discounts.
1300年の歴史を持つ西国巡礼。その文化と信仰を、現代人の心と足で繋ぎなおす試みが本格的に始まった。
As Japan’s oldest pilgrimage path enters a new era, this project seeks to revive its spiritual and cultural value for future generations.
