■World Premiere of New Noh Play “Tadasu” at Shimogamo Shrine – Tadasu Noh Marks Its 10th Anniversary in the Sacred Forest
On May 24, 2025, the 10th annual performance of “Tadasu Noh” will take place at the World Heritage Site Shimogamo Shrine (officially, Kamo Mioya Shrine) in Kyoto. The outdoor performance will be held on the shrine’s historic Butai-den (Stage Pavilion), designated as an Important Cultural Property, located within the sacred Tadasu no Mori (Forest of Correction).
“Tadasu Noh” traces its origins to the “Tadasu-gawara Kanjin Sarugaku,” a Noh performance held in 1464 in the presence of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. It was revived in 2015 to coincide with the shrine’s 34th Shikinen Sengu (ritual rebuilding held every 21 years), after a hiatus of over 550 years. Since 2019, it has been performed annually as a post-Aoi Matsuri (Kamo Festival) cultural event.
This year, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of its revival, the program will feature the world premiere of a newly commissioned Noh play, “Tadasu.” The lead role (shite) will be performed by the 14th-generation master of the prestigious Hayashi Noh family, Hayashi Kiemon (formerly Hayashi Soichiro). The play explores a mystical encounter between a man and a female deity in the Tadasu Forest, conveying a message about nature, memory, and the future.
The creation of “Tadasu” is part of a long-term cultural initiative looking ahead to the shrine’s 60th Shikinen Sengu in 2036—marking 1,000 years since the system was formalized in 1036. The production is envisioned as a continuing series, with each performance featuring evolving choreography, music, and costuming.
The performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission includes both reserved and unreserved seating, ranging from ¥30,000 (premium seating in the Shinpuku-den) to ¥5,000 general admission (¥3,000 for students). Advance tickets are available through the shrine office and online until May 23.
