■Rare 1884 Photographs of the Kanda Festival to Be Unveiled for the First Time at Kanda Myojin
神田明神（東京都千代田区）は、2025年4月12日（土）、神田祭に関する貴重な明治期の写真資料を初公開する講座イベントを開催する。会場は境内の文化交流館B1「EDOCCO STUDIO」。
Kanda Myojin Shrine in Tokyo will host a special cultural lecture event on Saturday, April 12, 2025, to unveil for the first time a set of rare historical photographs of the Kanda Festival taken in 1884 (Meiji 17). The venue will be the B1-level EDOCCO Studio inside the shrine’s Cultural Exchange Hall.
このたび公開されるのは、明治17年（1884）に撮影された神田祭の古写真群。スウェーデンの民族学博物館に所蔵されていたもので、昨年その存在が明らかとなった。当時の熊坂長範の山車人形を写した写真なども含まれており、江戸時代から続く「天下祭」としての神田祭の雰囲気を現在に伝える貴重な資料となる。
The photographs were discovered last year in the archives of the Swedish Museum of Ethnography. Among the images is a valuable depiction of the Kumasaka Chohan festival float, a renowned float featured in the Kanda Festival, known historically as the “Tenka Matsuri” (Festival of the Realm) during the Edo period.
講演では、人形文化の研究者である是澤博昭氏が登壇。神田祭の歴史や、氏子町から出された山車人形の文化的価値について解説する。あわせて、神田明神に保存されている江戸期の熊坂長範の山車人形の実物も展示される。
The event will feature a lecture by Dr. Hiroaki Koresawa, a specialist in Japanese doll and festival culture, who will explore the historical significance of the festival and its ornate float figures. As part of the event, the actual Kumazaka Chohan float head—crafted during the Edo period and now preserved at Kanda Myojin—will be on display.
また、今回の資料提供元であるスウェーデン国立世界文化博物館の学芸員、ヤンセ・ヘルガ氏がオンラインでゲスト出演し、写真の由来や発見経緯について語る予定。
In addition, Dr. Janse Helga, curator at Sweden’s National Museums of World Culture, who provided the photo materials, will join the event as a special guest speaker via online connection. She will speak about the photographs’ historical context and their path to rediscovery.
江戸から明治へと受け継がれた神田祭の姿を、国内外の視点から再発見する機会となる。
The event offers a rare opportunity to rediscover the grandeur and cultural heritage of the Kanda Festival through both Japanese and international perspectives, bridging past and present.
